Vintage Sewing

Dear Sew Retro Members and Readers,
I started Sew Retro back in June 2006, gaining members by leaving comments on blogs that posted about vintage things and asking them to please join.  I wanted to create a community of likeminded sewers who shared what they had made and found, answered questions, offered help and supported each other in their love of vintage and retro sewing.
I thought that 100 members would be a stretch and was amazed to keep sending out invitations and to watch the number rise and rise.  Today there are 527 members (not all active of course) which I still find hard to believe.  The number of hits this site receives each day and the fact that the invitation requests keep coming is still surprising to me. I’ve worked with and been helped by some lovely people over the years, Andrea who did the current site design for free and on her own time and Toria who has kept the site going (and visible, thanks Blogger…) in recent months.  We have been a bit like ducks in the upkeep of this site, everything looks smooth on the surface but underneath things are going on and there is constant work to be done answering questions, solving problems, planning events and sorting out any problems that come up.
I have loved running Sew Retro, setting up competitions and give always and seeing what everyone has been up to but my life today is very different from how it was 5 years ago and I am going to go through some more major changes this year which will mean that I need to allocate my time better.  My main priority has to be my children and myself and I can not afford to spend time or energy on everything I have in the past.  Sew Retro just does not fit into my life any more and with sadness I have realised that it is time for me to let go and move on.
In the first instance I am looking for someone to take over the site.  I would obviously prefer that it carry on being run ad free and not for profit but I understand that when it leaves my hands the new owner can do whatever they want with it.  Please drop me a line at sewretro at hotmail dot com if you are interested in taking over and include information in your email about your relationship with Sew Retro and how you would like to run it so I can endeavour to make a good choice for all our members.
Should a new owner not be found by the 1st October 2011 Sew Retro will cease to be an active site.  I will leave it up for reference but no new posts will be accepted.  I do understand that this option would be upsetting to many and it is not a decision I have taken quickly or lightly.
Thank you all for your support, interest and words over the years.  It is all of you who have made this site what it is and you should be proud of yourselves, I know I’m proud of us all.
Happy sewing and thank you again
Kind Regards

  2. No! Thank you, Anna, for everything. I don't have the skills to run a website, but just as a devoted follower, I wouldn't mind ads, hardly notice them.

  3. I would just like to say thank you for all your hard work and setting up this site in the first place. I am a daily visitor.

  4. Thank you Anna for providing such a wonderful place where retro sewers have come to share their projects as contributors and/or as visitors (I am one of the visitors). It is with such a sad heart I read of your leaving this site. While I genuinely understand your reasons for leaving, I am also very supportive of your decision to follow a new path. What sad news to receive on my birthday!

I wish I could do it, but alas I have the same time problem. But there is nothing like having my cup of morning Joe with Sew Retro creations…and I love the book that came out of the site as well. Good luck to you Anna and lots of x's and o's.

  18. Oh, I wish I had the skills and time to take this wonderful site over! It really has been a wonderful place for advice, encouragement and inspiration! I hope you find someone equally as great to run it Anna, it certainly deserves to carry on and I for one would feel lost without it!

I also wish you all the best for your future and thanks so much for all your hard work to create something this exciting for us all!

  19. Dear Anna,

what a pity – but I can perfectly understand your decision. I just discovered this wonderful site a few moths ago and found so many inspirational posts and blogs: Once again what a pity… I hope you will find a way of keeping this wonderful project going!

All the best for you and your family & greetings from Heidelberg (Germany),

  20. Five years is a long time and a big commitment – thank you. It's been wonderful to be a regular reader. Thanks so much for being behind the scenes for so long. If I were you I'd delete ALL rude comments – they don't deserve oxygen.

  21. I've sent you an email. Happy to help out. Don't know if I could run the whole site, but can it be a collaborative effort?
Thanks for all the great times!

  22. I have enjoyed this site so much! I look at it every night. I was inspired to start sewing again. Thank you sew much. I wishyou the best and hope that someone will take the torch and run with this. Anna M.

  23. I love Sew Retro, I read it all the time! I want to thank you for starting and maintaining this blog all these years, as I know that it must have taken hours of work each week. I hope all is well with you and I wish you much success! I agree that it is important to keep Sew-Retro ad-free, as it has created an environment that is marked by respectful reciprocity.

  24. Oh Anna,

This is so sad. I love, love this blog. You are the only one I ever gave giveaway to.

I would be able to take this on so Sew Retro continues to strive. No profit, advertisments etc. This was the one thing that attracted me to being a part of Sew Retro. It was just a bunch of gals loving vintage inspired clothing and making them.

  25. Anna thank you for all the work your have done and I understand your decision. I hope someone takes over Sew Retro as it is an awesome blog and inspired me to become a blogger. Good Luck, Lucy

  26. Great Tragedy! I can't imagine a day without checking in to catch new Sew Retro posts. That said, what a wonderful time I've had these past years, seeing everyone's work. It's been inspiring and delightful. And you're right, it looks so smooth from the spectator side of things. But all your work is so appreciated by lurkers like myself. Thank you so much for all that you've done. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you

  27. Thanks so much for all of your hard work, and to everyone who posts their lovely creations. Wishing you the best and looking forward to seeing what is next for sew retro!

  28. I am so saddened to learn this site may not continue. I visit every morning and have learned so much! Thank you for all the hours devoted to this endeavor. I am crossing my fingers this site will continue and wish you all the best.

  29. I never became a member, yet I've been coming here every day for the past 4 or 5 years to see what lovelies people have been making. I can't imagine the world of sewing blogs without SewRetro!

Hopefully somebody can take on after Anna to continue her wonderful work! And in the meantime, thank you Anna for doing such an amazing job all these years, and best of luck in your new endeavours!

  30. I would be willing to take on the ownership of this blog. My husband is a serious computer geek, even more so than me, and definitely has the skills to spiff up this website & add more features. I am not physically able to do much sewing right now (it really, really is not good for my back to be hunched over, & I can't modify my space much right now.) But I love planning fantasy projects and just looking at my vintage patterns & fabric & notions, and hoping things change.

I just have to post that the word verification is evers. Like we will love this website for evers. 🙂

  31. Thank you Anna and all who have assisted and all who have posted. I seldom post but read daily. So enjoy the stories and the photos and the talent shared here.

Happily I see there are some interested in carrying on the great site and work you Started. Best wishes to you.

  32. Good for you, Anna. Blogging can run your life after a while. I'm so impressed that you chose to focus on your family instead, more people should make that choice, if presented with it!
We'll miss you, but surely no one could fault your reasons for letting it pass to another. 🙂

  33. Thank you for all your hard work over the past years. I am fairly new to Sew Retro but have enjoyed everyday that I check in to see what everyone is up to. I hope you can find someone to pass the torch along to that can keep the site shining as bright as you did. I wish you the best of luck with your new focus in life!

  34. I just wanted to pop in and say a big, heartfelt thank you for all the work you've poured into Sew Retro and making it one of the best vintage sewing communities! I have gotten so much inspiration, learned tips and tricks and enjoyed seeing everyone's creations over the years. Here's hoping you find a fantastic new moderator/owner for the site, and wishing you all the best in the next chapter of your life!

  35. A huge thank you from me too Anna, I echo the sentiment that we will be sad to see you go and hope that the blog continues. I'm also in the family first boat so sadly can't help but I'm encouraged by the number of offers so far above that our beloved blog won't diminish. You've done amazing work here and can retire proudly! Best wishes from Molly, Mango and the owls!

  36. Thank you Anna for all your hard work, I hope you find someone who can continue to look after the community.
Best wishes to you and your family

  37. Thank you so much for forming this community. I really love being a part of it and enjoying the others who have made such beautiful things. Good luck with whatever comes your way, and I hope that you don't leave with too much sadness for all the happiness you've given all of us.
