Vintage Sewing

This or That

July 7, 2011

I just got this fabric from Joann’s

Its a lovely Rayon that just seemed to scream to me that it wants to be a vintage style dress. I also purchased some goldenrod colored piping because I’ve been so inspired by the posts at Colette Patterns.
However, I’m stuck on whether to make it a dress with a fitted skirt or full…here are the two patterns I’m deciding between.

I’ve been dying to make this fitted dress!

Love the princess seams and how the bolero mimics that.

I think I’ll for sure do a matching bolero for my dress…but what do you think? Or something different altogether…I’d love to hear your ideas.
Be sure to check out my blog posts.

  1. I have no idea what to suggest dress-wise but I do know I love that fabric!!

I have the first pattern and am looking to buy the second one, I like those princess lines too.

  2. I have the first pattern — fitted – and it's almost done. I think a full skirt would be lovely with either pattern.

  3. I would suggest the first pattern using the pattern pieces for a pencil skirt dress. That woud look wonderful!!

  4. Looking at this again, I think I would agree with Sommervogel to do a fitted skirt. Unless the print is very small (hard to tell from pic) I would avoid something with too many lines, like the princess seams, because it would segment the fabric.

While a full skirt would be great for this project, again I would be concerned that if the skirt is very full the folds will break up the pattern (unless you wear a crin). So the fitted skirt seems more flexible.

  5. I love that flamingo fabric. I will have to make a trip to Joann's to see if they have it. I have a vintage floral arrangement set from the 50's that was my grandmothers. There are 2 pink flamingos that sit in a dark green rectangular bowl. I love it.
I like the second pattern the best.

  6. I adore that fabric! I love love love pink flamingos! I have the Butterick pattern and adore it. I cant remember what view it is but the "full skirt" version (in black) is not a dress but a skirt you put on over the fitted dress. You could make the dress in that cute fabric and then make a solid skirt.
