Vintage Sewing

Channeling Betty Draper

February 5, 2011

 Hi all!

I know it is kind of annoying to refer to every mid-century dress you sew as “so Mad Men” (eBay sellers are very guilty of this) but I definitely made this dress with Betty in mind.

The back is my favorite part.  The waist has a self-belt that cinches in the back with a big bow.
I used Simplicity 4908 from the early 60’s, vintage rayon purchased from Etsy, and vintage notions from eBay.

I made no changes to the pattern or to the fit. You can see more pictures and read about the construction and inspiration here.

  1. Gorgeous … I had that etsy fabric in my 'favourites' and was sad when it was sold but I'm glad you've made such a lovely dress (it would've sat in my stash for months, I expect!)

  2. That is so neat! I bought similar fabric in a secondhand shop in Ireland, maybe it is a dress like this I have to make!! -Kristi
