Vintage Sewing

October 12, 2010

Hello Sew Retro Community,

My name is Rebecca, and I am a self-taught seamstress. I’ve been sewing little things since I was about seven, when my grandma taught me how to make a potholder. I started reconstructing and designing my own clothing about five years ago, and I enjoy learning new things to improve my skills. So, I look forward to gleaning all of the sewing knowledge and wisdom from everyone here, and hopefully I can offer something useful along the way too.

I enjoy reconstructing vintage items and creating unique clothing using vintage patterns and vintage materials. I also sew clothing of my own design, and typically these have a retro vibe as well. I sell some of my designs and reconstructions on Etsy, but many of the projects I blog about are pieces I create for myself.

I write about the hodgepodge of sewing projects that occupy my time, and random anecdotes from my life, here: Verity Clothing.

Here’s a pic of one of my recent creations from a vintage pattern, blogged about here: Grey Gardens Dress.

And here’s a picture of my most recent reconstruction: Dress from a Jacket.

I look forward to reading about all of your projects, and hope you enjoy reading about mine as well.

  1. Hey there, welcome to Sew Retro. I've just spent nearly 45min browsing your amazing blog…I'm in awe of how you completely transform garments. I wish I had the expertise and the vision!

  2. welcome! i've been eyeing up the pattern you used for your grey gardens dress forever…it was good to see a real-life version. it's adorable! maybe now i'll actually buy it.

  3. It's *sew* nice to meet you! I starting sewing at age 7 too – when my great grandmother taught me. In college, I inherited all of her fabrics and patterns from the 40s and started recreating pieces. Years later, I am still at it!
