Vintage Sewing

Betty Draper Pattern

September 2, 2009

Based on patterns that Michelle from Patterns From the Past sold to the costume department this pattern is quite probably be the one that was used for some of Betty Drapers wardrobe during episodes aired in the current series.

During some of the scenes in the Draper residence Betty was wearing a cream/white shirt with a pattern on it which in my memory seems very similar to this pattern (I think she wore it with a tie of some kind just above the bump). Of course I can’t find a shot of it online anywhere, if any one has any success please post it so we can compare!

However, I did find this shot and it seems to have a very similar collar going on which is interesting.

Maternity clothes aren’t something that I’ll ever need to be sewing for myself again but I would have loved to have tried some of these vintage patterns, maybe I’ll sew them for others in the future!

Happy sewing!

  1. Even maternity clothes back then were stylish. We went through an ugly phase for a long time, but those are very nice!

  2. I agree. Back in the 50's and 60's maternity clothes were very stylish and downright elegant when it came to formal affairs. I wonder when not wearing maternity clothes became vogue? Oversized t shirts and stretch pants are nice for around the house, but for public display they can turn rediculous. If you find any photos of your moms, grandmothers and aunts pregnant during that period you'll see how nice they all looked. I would love to see women start wearing them again. One thing Mad Men is doing for the younger generation is showing them how dressing up was what we did back then. Dressing down was for yard work or basically any kind of activity where you might ruin your good clothes.

  3. If you look at Jackie Kennedy in early 60's there are some great pictures of her dressed up and pregnant. That was one of the image references, I suggested to their costume department. I also suggested they look at Laura Petrie from the Dick Van Dyke show. That was full of early 1960s iconic images and Laura was pregnant on that show.

  4. I don't know where that image of January Jones is, but I think she was wearing it when she was talking to Don in the living room, I think during the episode that her father, brother, and his family came to visit.

I agree, I'm in my late 20s and have an overwhelming urge to walk up to women my age and smack them for wearing PAJAMAS in stores at 2 in the afternoon! Oh, and those aren't even pregnant women! GAH!
