Simplicity 3580 First Vintage Make of 2018

Akram's Ideas: Vintage Simplicity 3580

It feels like forever since I last posted on We Sew Retro. Mainly because I haven’t really been sewing vintage patterns the last few months.

However, while going through my UFO pile back in May I came across Simplicity 3580 a vintage shirtwaist dress from the 1960’s.

Can’t believe this has been in my UFO pile for 2 years

I started this pattern nearly two years ago now, and never quite came back around to finishing it.

At the time I’d gained some weight and we were in the middle of a move.

Completing a UFO

I was happily surprised when I pulled it out to find that the bodice fit me (yeah weightloss and healthy eating) and that the only thing left on this project was the skirt and the buttons.

I’m so happy with how Simplicity 3580 turned out

Needless to say in one afternoon I managed to complete this project.

I’m so glad I came back to this dress. It is exactly the type of vintage dresses I love.  I love shirtdresses of any kind, I love the drape of the sleeves I love the cuff detail and the soft pleats on the skirt.

Vintage pattern, vintage fabric, vintage hat…. perfection

This dress was not a planned make this spring but I’m so happy I got to it and that I’ve finally finished it. Even better is that this counts as my first Vintage Pledge make of 2018.

Vintage Simplicity 5890 a 1960’s Jumper Dress

Akram's Ideas: Vintage Simplicity 5890

We are nearing the end of the year and I’ve totally forgotten to share my third #VintagePledge of 2017, which I made earlier this autumn.

I really loved the look of version 1

This pattern is one that I got in a vintage pattern haul way back in September.
I really like the look of the aline version of this dress and just happened to have the same color fabric as shown in the cover illustration.

Another #VintagePledge2017 make

While the dress was fairly simple I did have to do some resizing which I ended up not doing exactly right.

The dress fits but the front bodice darts don’t line up with front skirt seams, which is so irritating.

I’m really irritated about my mistake

Final Dress

The mistakes I made aren’t drastic and most people won’t even notice.

Still, it was enough to discourage me and bury the dress in the back of my closet.

In the end this dress is pretty nice

I recently pulled out the dress and despite the mistakes, I found that it was totally wearable and the color is perfect for winter.

It’s actually a great dress for winter

Gathered Skirt Paired with Simplicity 1364

By on July 21, 2016

In an earlier post I mentioned how much I love Simplicity 1364 blouse pattern. I loved it so much I wanted to make more versions of this blouse.

While searching my stash I found I had a lovely butterfly print fabric and decided to use it for another blouse.

I love this cheerful butterfly print

I really liked how the piping turned out on my shift dress I decided to add piping to this blouse.

After making the blouse I found that I had enough fabric left over that I could make a matching skirt.

I decided to make a simple gathered skirt. To give the set a more dress like appearance I aded piping to the skirt waistband.

I can wear it as a dress or as sperates

While the print might be a bit childish I really love the fun look of this this combo. I also love that at first glance it looks like a dress, but has the versatility of a two piece.
