Butterick 6354 #RetroTikiCollab Project

By on August 11, 2016

Wow, didn’t Abi from the Crafty Pinup do an amazing job on her Bustier to Skirt Pattern Hack Gertie’s 6354 Butterick pattern as part of the #RetroTikiCollab project.

I was also lucky enough to be apart of the #RetroTikiCollab project along with d Abi from The Crafty PinupChristina fromGussets and Godets  and Bianca from Vintage on Tap.

Retro Tiki Collab Project
I’m thrilled to be apart of this project with such talented seamstresses.

For my take on this pattern was to rock the original, by making the pattern as directed.

This was the first time I worked with boning so I was a little nervous but think it all turned out well.

I’m really surprised how good this came out.

For this project I used a cotton navy blue fabric with a golden tropical flower print on it. Not necessarily  very tiki, but I had just enough fabric and I need more blue in my wardrobe.

The entire pattern only took a day and a half to put together, so I was quite pleased with the simplicity of this project.

The shorts and bustier is great for hot days

I wasn’t sure how much wear I would get out of this pattern, but since I’ve made it I’ve worn it a couple of times. This outfit is great for hot days, especially ones we’ve had recently that have hit a 100+.

I’m really glad to be apart of this #RetroTikiCollab project and had a lot of fun making this project. Also, as part of this project I decided to host a fabric giveaway.

Vintage Pattern Review: Simplicity 8183

By on July 30, 2016

I bought this SUPER cute 1960’s backless dress pattern on Etsy a few months ago. I already had the PERFECT fabric to make it with, a blue cotton floral with a it of stretch. It almost has a Hawaiian feel to it, doesn’t it?

This pattern definitely satisfied my sewing fix as it was very fast and easy to sew. I made no changes to the pattern (save the measurements…a size 10? I wish!), and I used two vintage pearly flat fisheye buttons at the back.

I really like this design because of the peek-a-boo back. It’s low, but not TOO low, so it’s perfect for concealing my “love handles”. I think it turned out great!
Thanks for looking!

“I dream of Tiki” Hawaiian dress sew-along!

By on April 7, 2016

tiki

Aloha, my fellow vintage sewing enthusiasts! A couple weeks ago I posted an inquiry on the We Sew Retro sew-and-tell Facebook page regarding a Hawaiian dress sew-along. There seems to be enough interest to make this a fun little activity, so here we go!

The rules:

1. It must be a Hawaiian dress. It can be a full skirt, sarong, or whatever floats your boat, it just needs to be Hawaiian/tiki themed!

2. You can use whatever pattern makes you happiest, (or draft your own!), but it should be vintage/vintage reproduction/or styled after an actual vintage garment.

That’s it!

In order to make this as fun and engaging as possible, take pictures of your progress and post each week before we advance to the next stage of our sew-along! I’ll post details on each step as we progress.

If you are having troubles at any point, post for help! This can be in the comments on the blog post itself, or on the sew-and-tell page on Facebook!

We’ll start May 1st, so everyone has a chance to gather supplies 🙂

Post your pattern and fabric choices in the comments for inspiration!

I can’t wait to get started!

Stormy TikiColada Circle Skirt

By on October 31, 2013

Hi all and happy Halloween!

Here is a circle skirt I made recently to add to my summer wardrobe, They fabric is a hawaiian Rayon/cotton blend, and it’s got lovely airy movement!

I was really drawn to the colours and the stormy feel. It’s a little shorter than I wanted, owing to the fact that the store only had 2 metres left and I had to try and make the fabric directions match up as much as I could nby making two half circles and sewing them together, I may just have enough left for a matching simple string top, we’ll see.

Please excuse the flip flops, it’s VERY hot here at the moment in Perth
