1957 outfit

By on December 23, 2014

voor2 With the end of the year getting very close, I was keen to try and complete my goal for the Vintage Pattern Pledge after all. And this outfit really helped to achieve that!

rokI found this wide wale corduroy and thought it would work nicely for a pleated skirt. Because of the pledge, I looked for a vintage tutorial and found this one, from February 1957. Which happened to include instructions for the belt as well.

The next issue of the same magazine (Dutch ladies’ magazine Libelle which, at the time, was published weekly) contained this image in the mailorder pattern section:

outfitPleated skirt, gathered belt (check and check) and a normal-for-1950’s blouse… That looks great!

blouseSo, I went in search of a blouse pattern and found one in the sewing magazine Marion from March 1955. I changed the collar to suit my purpose but other than that, I made the blouse exactly as designed and drafted back then.

achterAnd this is the result. Not quite as luxurious as the inspiration (which looks like it’s mostly made from silk) but still colourful and fun.

You can read more about this outfit on my blog and I’ve made a little tutorial for that belt here.

Make Your Own Bow Belt…

By on April 25, 2013

As promised, I’ve written a detailed tutorial on how to make your very own bow belt on my blog like the one I made for my striped dress.

23 Apr 2013 6

Bow belts are so easy to make and can add that pretty little detail to any outfit to finish it off. They are also great for using those scraps of left over fabric you have that you aren’t quite sure what to do with.

There are endless options for customising your belt as well. You don’t have to make the belt from one single fabric – mix it up and have a different coloured bow and belt, or a different textured knot on the bow. You can also just make the bow part of this tutorial and use it as a decorative feature on any number of projects from head bands, pillows and cushions, hair pieces, shoe clips…the list is never ending.

If any of you make one, I’d love to see them!

xx

Thanksgiving 50s Style

By on November 26, 2012

I hope all of you in the States had a fabulous Thanksgiving weekend! I did! Now, I’m not too excited about Christmas stuff out and about around Halloween, but I do start to get in the mood around Thanksgiving and I did rock a Christmas vibe this year for turkey day!

I used Butterick 8078 to make up this pattern. I found this great 50s looking Christmas quilting fabric at JoAnn Fabrics last year so I snapped some up. (And I think I may have spied it there this year too!)

The pattern.

The white top felt a bit blah so I added a bit of red embroidery to spice it up. And I used a thrifted vintage belt kit to make the matching belt.

And what full skirted 50s dress would be complete without a crinoline? (Which is also me-made!) Want to see more of this dress? It’s on my blog too!
