Autumn Leaf Gable Top

Akram's Ideas: Autumn Leaf Gable Top

A while back I made the Gable top by Jennifer Lauren Handmade and fell in love. Immediately after making the top I knew I wanted to make a second one, but had to find the right fabric.

My first Gable Top

Luckily for me, I came across a great autumn leaf print stretch fabric I had in my stash. Not only was it theme appropriate for the season, the colors were all jeweled tones.

I love the print on my latest Gable Top

While it may be a modern pattern, it has a great 1950’s feel to it with the slash neckline.

As with the first top, I’m in love with this one as well. I love the colors and how soft the fabric is.

This is definitely not the last Gabel top I plan to make, it’s just such an easy and lovely pattern to make.

This top looks great with a skirt or over jeans.

3 Different Delphine Skirts

By on October 6, 2016
Akram's Ideas : 3 New Delphine Skirts

On of my most used patterns right now is the Delphine Skirt from the book Love at First Stitch by Tilly Walnes.

I made 3 different Delphine Skirts

While I’ve made a few of these skirts in the past, it was the “One Week One Pattern” or #OWOP16 challenge hosted by Cinderellis Sews, that prompted me to make a few new ones.

The goal of the challenge was to wear garments made from one pattern of your choice, every day for one week. I already had 4 previously made Delphine skirts, so that meant I only needed 3 more to make.

You can read about my previous makes here:

While the Delphine skirt is not exactly a vintage pattern it is retro inspired. The skirt itself has a classic 1960’s A-Line design.

I love this nautical inspired one

In the book Love at First Stitch , Tilly goes over a couple of variations on the skirt. Such as adding buttons to the font. Which is what I did for this nautical inspired version.

This brown Delphine skirt is prefect for fall

Since it’s officially autumn I decided that my next two skirts be autumn appropriate. I started first with a brown skirt. I need more brown in my wardrobe.

Love the color of this purple Delphine skirt

I followed up with a lovely purple skirt made out of a quilted type fabric. For both the brown and purple skirt I added a lining for warmth. I also added belt loops which are an option in the book. Finally I also added pockets, because skirts need pockets.

Thanksgiving Dress, McCall’s 6473

By on October 22, 2013

As mentioned in my recent Autumn Apron post, here is a post dedicated to my Thanksgiving dress.  I used McCalls 6473 from 1962 – it’s been in the pattern stash for years and I’d always been curious to try it.

I used a piece of burnt orange/rust silk dupioni that was also from stash that I’ve been itching to use because I think it’s just so beautiful.  It’s also a really smooth dupioni, it would even be quite smooth for a shantung.

Even though I ran into a couple of little hiccups (detailed in my blog post) and might do a couple of things differently if I make this again (I’m feeling pretty keen right now to try it in wool for winter!) I really enjoyed making this and am very pleased with how it turned out.  I’m really liking the crossover detail on the front – and the opportunity it provides to use BIG buttons! lol  I think in my next version I’ll tweak the pattern a bit so as to accommodate even BIGGER buttons, heehee!

I did actually cook a whole Thanksgiving dinner while wearing this dress, and everything was fine thanks to my trust new apron.  I love when I can make a special dress/outfit for holidays, it just makes me feel all the more festive, somehow.
