Butterick 6354 #RetroTikiCollab Project

By on August 11, 2016

Wow, didn’t Abi from the Crafty Pinup do an amazing job on her Bustier to Skirt Pattern Hack Gertie’s 6354 Butterick pattern as part of the #RetroTikiCollab project.

I was also lucky enough to be apart of the #RetroTikiCollab project along with d Abi from The Crafty PinupChristina fromGussets and Godets  and Bianca from Vintage on Tap.

Retro Tiki Collab Project
I’m thrilled to be apart of this project with such talented seamstresses.

For my take on this pattern was to rock the original, by making the pattern as directed.

This was the first time I worked with boning so I was a little nervous but think it all turned out well.

Akram's Ideas : Retro Tiki Collab
I’m really surprised how good this came out.

For this project I used a cotton navy blue fabric with a golden tropical flower print on it. Not necessarily  very tiki, but I had just enough fabric and I need more blue in my wardrobe.

The entire pattern only took a day and a half to put together, so I was quite pleased with the simplicity of this project.

The shorts and bustier is great for hot days

I wasn’t sure how much wear I would get out of this pattern, but since I’ve made it I’ve worn it a couple of times. This outfit is great for hot days, especially ones we’ve had recently that have hit a 100+.

I’m really glad to be apart of this #RetroTikiCollab project and had a lot of fun making this project. Also, as part of this project I decided to host a fabric giveaway.

Butterick Patterns by Gerite B6354 – Bustier to Skirt Pattern Hack! #RetroTikiCollab

By on

Hi everyone!

As promised, here’s the second part of my Butterick Patterns by Gerite B6354 – Bustier to Skirt Pattern Hack post! Part of the very exciting #RetroTikiCollab I’m participating in with fellow vintage style sewing bloggers. You can see the first part of this post HERE, all about my rather sassy Wanda Woodward style wearable toile.

But for my main post, this pattern just had to be tiki, so I went for it 100%! I picked up my Hawaiian style fabric a while back in my local Textile Express store in their bargain bin. At the time I had no idea what to use it for, I just knew I needed it. Then this collaboration appeared and it was meant to be….

Butterick Patterns by Gerite B6354 – Wanda Woodward Wearable Toile

By on August 5, 2016

Hi everyone!

This post is a little different from my usual for quite a few reasons! To start, it’s my first ‘pattern hack’ post, my first fitted make and my first wearable toile! Also this post will lead on to another post with the final make and full instructions on my pattern hack. That’s why this one will be a little shorter than normal as it’s more of an introduction to the main dress – if that makes any sense…

Check out my wearable toile:

Retro Butterick ’53 B5708 – Shoulder Tie Dress

By on June 9, 2016

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting on We Sew Retro and I hope your enjoy my vintage inspired makes!

As soon as I saw this vintage Butterick pattern I knew I needed it! I love the tie shoulders and the multiple styling options displayed on the front of the packet. It’s also something totally different to anything I already have in my wardrobe or in my pattern stash. I wanted to create a striking vintage style dress perfect for special occasions, sunny walks along the river and general Summer-time frolicking! I also thought this would be a fabulous edition for my Vintage Pledge 2016!

I love the Retro Butterick pattern range, in my dreams I own them all. I’ve previously reviewed the infamous Butterick 4790, otherwise know as the walkaway dress, and hoped the Butterick 5708 pattern would be equally as straight forward…

Retro Butterick 5152 Dressing Gown

By on January 7, 2016

YAY! This is my very first post on We Sew Retro!  I have been silently stalking in the background, but never had the courage to post till now.

I’ve had Butterick 5152 in my vintage-inspired pattern box for quite a while and had intentions on making a dressing gown that was pretty enough to lounge around the house in when I was disinterested in wearing clothes.  (Like, every Sunday afternoon!)  But the red charmeuse in my stash was vying for my attention, so I changed my mind and went for an over-the-top gown with feathers and lace!

The pattern was not too tricky, save the yoke.  It was awful!  I LOATHE hand-sewing!  The feather trim was also a nightmare as the feathers were already attached to a strip of ribbon, but apparently they were glued to the ribbon, so the glue ended up ruining three needles and made all the stitches skip. Ugh!  : >(

Otherwise, I ADORE this gown! While it is no good for lounging, it’s perfect for a romantic evening at home with hubby and a flute of bubbly!

For more eye candy, see my blog post.

Thanks for looking!

Paradise Playsuit

By on January 1, 2016

After the success of my last 1950s-style romper a few weeks ago, I couldn’t wait to make another – they’re the perfect summer outfit, so cute yet comfortable! Though I also based this one off the romper variation in Gertie Sews Vintage Casual, I decided that this time I would make the shorts circle shorts instead. And how sweet is the result!

Paradise Playsuit

I also included in-seam pockets in the french seams, the first time I’d tried this, and it turned out fantastically. I’m never making anything without pockets again!

50s-Style Playsuit

By on December 5, 2015

I feel like there are few garments which capture the pin-up girl aesthetic so well as a good old-fashioned playsuit. I’d been wanting one forever but the selections in shops disappointed and patterns I saw failed to inspire. Until, that is, I saw the romper variation in Gertie Sews Vintage Casual. It was the playsuit of my dreams, and I am so pleased to finally be able to bring those dreams in to reality!

Polkadot Playsuit

I was so delighted with how it turned out 🙂 Though there were some trials and tribulations in sewing it, the result was well worth the effort. You can read more about it, see more photos and construction details on my blog.
