Purple Tiki Ensemble

By on August 4, 2016

Hello Everyone! It has been quite a while since I last posted on this site. I really enjoyed how my birthday outfit this year turned out. I have always wanted to make a 1950’s tiki ensemble and I finally accomplished it!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESI used Gertie’s new tiki inspired pattern 6354 from Butterick for the skirt and the bolero. I knew I didn’t have enough fabric to make the bustier from this pattern, so I turned to Simplicity 1426 to make the top. This outfit was a breeze to make and looks fantastic.

Retro Inspired Birthday Dress

By on September 4, 2014

I am a little late posting this as my birthday is in July. Every year for my birthday I try to make a dress for me to wear that day. This year I made a 1950’s inspired cutout dress. I have always wanted a cutout dress since seeing that iconic dress Marilyn Monroe wears in the film Niagara. I drafted my own pattern. The fabric I used was actually a twin sheet from Target I bought ages ago for about 5 bucks and the black buttons I already had in my stash.

Vintage Inspired Polka Dot Dress

By on August 24, 2014

I have not posted any sewing projects in quite a long time. This pass spring I had back surgery and was unable to do any sewing while recovering. Now that I am pretty much fully recovered I have gone on a sewing spree. I used McCall’s retro inspired 6331 bodice pattern to make this dress. I drafted my own skirt for this dress as I wanted to have pockets, and I knew that I didn’t have enough of the polka dot fabric to achieve the length I wanted. Overall I am pretty happy with this dress.

1960’s Inspired Rogue

By on January 16, 2014

It has been quite a long time since I have made a post here. I haven’t been doing a lot a of sewing lately due to a back injury I have been dealing with. The lovely Heapha made a post showing off her vintage inspired Avengers costume, which has inspired me to make a post about my own vintage take on a Marvel character.

I have been a huge fan of the X-Men since I was a little girl. Rogue is my favorite character, so when I decided to go to Comic Con St. Louis last spring I knew I wanted to pay homage to her. I didn’t want to do anything traditional, so I decided to put a vintage 1960’s twist on my outfit. I used The Wiggle Dress pattern from Gertie’s New Book for Better Sewing. It went together very smoothly for what little time I had to finish it. I finished both my dress and my boyfriend’s Spider-Man motorcycle style jacket at around 2 am the day of the convention. After seeing photos I wish I would have spent some time on ironing my dress a bit more. I got lots of super amazing compliments from people, which was super exciting. The best part though was getting to meet Stan Lee, one of my heroes while wearing this costume.

Smplicity Skirt 1952

By on October 19, 2013

Hello vintage lovers,

This is my first post here on We Sew Retro. I have been a big fan of this blog for a while now, and have just finally gotten the motivation to start posting some of the items I have made.

I have wanted a super simplistic 1950’s style skirt for fall for a while now. I knew exactly what pattern I wanted to use, which was this Simplicity 4083 from 1952.

I found 3 yards of an amazing lime green heavy weight linen at an estate sale, I knew right away that I wanted to use it with this pattern. I decided to make view 3, with the waistband on view 1. The pattern called for 3 and a half yards of fabric, so I shortened the skirt by about 6 inches and was able to make up this skirt with only 3 yards.

This skirt was a breeze to sew up. I will definitely be using this pattern again. I love how the lapped zipper in the back of this skirt turned out.

Overall I am super pleased with this skirt, it is a perfect fit and makes me feel super confident!
