#EasterSpringDress2017 – Sew Over It – Vintage Shirt Dress #2!

By on April 13, 2017

Hi pinups! I love a good sew along and I don’t need much tempting into sewing a new dress, especially when the theme is Spring. When I saw Akram’s Ideas and Judith Dee‘s Easter Spring Dress 2017 sewalong I couldn’t wait to get involved.

This was my second time sewing this pattern and I really do like it. It’s reasonably simple to follow with a flattering shape and a sweet rounded collar. This time around I made a smaller size. Whilst my first one certainly fits me, I wanted a more fitted waist. There was a point I didn’t think it was going to fit across my bust, but hurrah it does and I’m really happy with it. For once, I think I might have found my perfect fit for this pattern.

Butterick Patterns by Gertie B6380 – 1940s Style Tea Dress

By on March 13, 2017

I’m so excited to share this dress with you! I feel so lucky with my sewing mojo having made my two of my new favourite dresses in a row (the first being THIS Simplicity number). I’ve be lusting after this Butterick B6380 pattern since it came out and have had it in my pattern stash since last year, waiting for the right fabric to come along! It’s a classic 1940s vintage style tea dress, designed by my sewing muse Gertie.

Sewing Summary:

Pattern: Butterick Pattern by Gertie 6380 Sweeheart Neckline Dress with Gathered Bodice

Fabric: 2m (with plenty left over) of viscose and a satin lining

Notions: 22″ concealed zip & 3 buttons to finish

Sewing time: 1 day and the hem on the following day

Modifications: I used a concealed zip instead of a lapped zipper and altered the pattern size (as stated above)

Fit: After a few tweaks, it fits perfectly!

Difficulty: Simpler than I thought, but certainly a challenge. Great project for confident beginners and for advanced seamstresses alike.

Watch out for: Getting even gathers and making sure the centre front point is precise.

Make again?: Yes! I really enjoyed this pattern.

Overall, you can probably tell, I’m over the moon with this dress. I think the design is super flattering on me and will be great for ladies with a larger bust and hourglass figures. I wore it with my favourite Coffee Seamed Stockings from my shop for a true 1940s look and I think they were meant to be.

To see this dress in action, I wore it in my Sew & Tell | February 2017 video over on my NEW YouTube channel. Please do subscribe!

Simplicity 1459 – Vintage 1950s Shirt Dress

By on February 18, 2017

Hi pinups! This dress is the perfect vintage Valentine’s Day dress, which I’ll certainly be rocking well into the Summer. I’ve been keeping an eye on this vintage 1950s Simplicity 1459 pattern for a while as I’m a sucker for a shirt dress, especially a vintage one! So in collaboration with online haberdashery Weaver Dee it felt like the perfect time to try it, paired with a classic floral cotton for a true retro vibe.

Sewing Summary:

Pattern: Simplicity 1459 – Weaver Dee

Fabric: Poly Cotton Fabric – Navy / Pink Rose Garden – £3.00 per m – Weaver Dee

Notions: Medium Weight Iron on  Interfacing & 22″ & Concealed Nylon Zip [817 Cerise Pink] – Weaver Dee

Sewing time: I spent two afternoons on this.

Modifications: Added 3 buttons instead of 2, and I used a concealed zip instead of a lapped zipper

Fit: Perfect! I know, I’m surprised too.

Difficulty: Straightforward. I was pleasantly surprised at how simply this came together (ignoring my stupid mistake!). I’d also recommend this for adventurous beginners.

Watch out for: Don’t forget to sew the collar points properly like me!

Make again?: Yes!

By on January 25, 2017

Hi pinups! I’m so excited about this make, I couldn’t wait to share it with you, so I bumped it right to the top of my blog post queue! Lets get into it… I recently made a button up skirt and combined with my Pinterest sewing inspiration board and a girl in working in my local H&M, I was inspired to make my own button up dungaree dress, using the Tilly and the Buttons Cleo Pinafore & Dungaree dress Sewing Pattern as the base…

Modifications: See my full post for my pattern hack!
Fit: Exactly what I wanted.
Difficulty: Nice and simple.
Watch out for: A tidy front facing and neat top stitching will make all the difference to the final look. Take your time.

A 60s Twist on a Modern Pattern! Tilly and the Buttons Cleo Dungaree Dress

By on November 14, 2016

Hi everyone!

Whilst I love vintage styles, I’m definitely a lazy 60s style girl in the colder months and save the 1950s for Summer. And luckily a lot of Tilly’s patterns lend themselves to a little 60s twist so they fit in to my wardrobe very nicely indeed!

cleodungareedressimage2

Sewing Summary:

Notions: 2 buttons
Sewing time: Half a day – need time to concentrate on that top stitching.
Modifications: I also opted for a hem half way between the two options.
Fit: Good! It’s a tighter fit on me that some I’ve seen online because of my figure. I think when I make it again, I’ll add a little extra on the hips. But I like the tight fit with the denim fabric. It makes these dungarees feel accidentally sassy!
Difficulty: Easy-peasy! Beginners – get this pattern!
Watch out for: Tidy top-stitching takes extra care and making sure your pockets are central/even.
Make Again?: Yes! I have lilac needle cord and dungaree clips waiting in the wings for my next one!
