The Last Dance Dress

By on September 2, 2011

It’s done!!

I started sewing Butterick B5281 for a dance I was going to last October, didn’t get it done in time and went with plan B. I recently picked it up again, for another dance I didn’t get to (long story) and with the help of some the lovely people here at Sew Retro, it is now finished.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice & encouragement, it was invaluable.

Li’l help, please?

By on August 19, 2011
I am currently trying to finish this dress, Butterick B5281, and am really struggling with the neckline.

I’ve read the instructions several times and I still can’t make sense of how the neckline should sit. Version A appears to be on an angle but Version B (short sleeves) looks to be straight. The line drawings on the back are no help either. Then there’s the pleats on the shoulder; they tend to create a curved edge rather than what appears to be square. Arrrgh!!!

I’m already on my second try at squaring off the neckline but am making a right mess of things. Has anyone else made this dress? If so, any suggestions on how to finish the neckline? It’s driving me nuts!!
Thanks in advance,
Tamara

An Introduction

By on July 18, 2011

Hi! My name is Tamara and I’m a long time lurker, first time poster. I have an ever-expanding vintage pattern collection and my favourite eras to sew from are the 30s & 40s because the styles suit me to a tea.

Simplicity 3162, aka The Nemesis, was a very early addition to my pattern collection and, as much a I hate to admit, it has taken me roughly 4 years to get this dress happening. I’m really pleased with the result and wanted to share it with all the inspiring people at Sew Retro. Details of its construction and more photos on my blog www.anewballofstring.blogspot
