Umbrella Sweetheart Sundress

By on June 10, 2013

I have another finished project from Gertie’s Book for Better Sewing, it’s the sweetheart sundress made up in this adorable umbrella print cotton.  I also did a shirred back, a vintage detail that I am now obsessed with, it gives the bodice such a snug feeling. I also added one of my favorite things Ric Rac, two rows of it at the hem. It’s a navy and white striped Ric Rac, what could be better?

Gertie’s Shirtwaist Dress in Linen

By on May 30, 2013

Hello vintage lovers! I’m back with another dress from the marvelous book “Gertie’s New Book for Better Sewing” . This shirtwaist dress in 100% retro, and I am so in love with it. I used a linen with a bit of texture in it that has been in my stash for two years now, just waiting to be turned into a shirtdress. What is more useful than a shirtdress?! nothing.

Jiffy Dress: Simplicity 1609

By on April 12, 2013

Isn’t this new reprint from Simplicity the BEST?! I love the shape, and it has french darts and one piece facings! It was a dream to put together, I had a super cute dress in a matter of hours. I used a cotton/lycra blend in this fantastic coral color, with a pique collar and covered buttons. I made view A, but I’m already dreaming of a view B version for myself!

Cherry Print Vogue 8728

By on April 9, 2013

Hello vintage lovers! This is my second version of the Vintage Vogue reprint 8728. I finally got the fit right, the first dress had so much ease I went two sizes down for the perfect fit. The fabric is cherry print rayon, which is very lightweight and has a bit of stretch, from Mood in NYC. I think it is the perfect combination of fabric and pattern, I just love the way it came out.

Gertie’s Wiggle Dress

By on March 5, 2013

Hello vintage lovers! I’ve gone all out Joan for the Mad Men Challenge. My Aunt is a hairdresser and I had her do my hair in the signature Joan updo. The dress is the wiggle dress from Gertie’s Book for better sewing, another excellent pattern from Gertie’s book. This is my third so far! I used the size ten and the only alterations it needed was more wiggle in the hips! The fabric is a gorgeous purple wool crepe that was a dream to work with. By on December 31, 2012

Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday. Just popping by to show you a present I sewed for my Mom. Butterick 9214, from 1959. I really enjoyed making this pattern, I love the elegance of it. I used a heavy velour fabric which has a great drape and is cozy for a robe. My mom loves it and feels very glam in it. Read more about on my blog: ErikaMadeIt

Blue Rose Dress

By on May 22, 2012

This is my version of vintage butterick 9752. I used a paneled cotton jacquard, with a bright blue rose print. The fabric was a score from fabricmartonline.com at only $ 3.99 a yard. The dress is a mix of butterick 9752 for the back and directions and my go to current pattern, simplicity 2444. I wanted the fit to be perfect so I used the modern pattern for the skirt and the front, and the back is a higher version of the scoopneck vintage pattern. I love that the butterick pattern called for jumbo ric rac. I have always wanted to use it! For more about this dress please visit my blog, ErikaMadeIt
