Retro Tiki Collab Project

Wow, didn’t Abi from the Crafty Pinup do an amazing job on her Bustier to Skirt Pattern Hack Gertie’s 6354 Butterick pattern as part of the #RetroTikiCollab project.

I was also lucky enough to be apart of the #RetroTikiCollab project along with d Abi from The Crafty PinupChristina fromGussets and Godets  and Bianca from Vintage on Tap.

Retro Tiki Collab Project
I’m thrilled to be apart of this project with such talented seamstresses.

For my take on this pattern was to rock the original, by making the pattern as directed.

This was the first time I worked with boning so I was a little nervous but think it all turned out well.

Akram's Ideas : Retro Tiki Collab
I’m really surprised how good this came out.

For this project I used a cotton navy blue fabric with a golden tropical flower print on it. Not necessarily  very tiki, but I had just enough fabric and I need more blue in my wardrobe.

The entire pattern only took a day and a half to put together, so I was quite pleased with the simplicity of this project.

The shorts and bustier is great for hot days

I wasn’t sure how much wear I would get out of this pattern, but since I’ve made it I’ve worn it a couple of times. This outfit is great for hot days, especially ones we’ve had recently that have hit a 100+.

I’m really glad to be apart of this #RetroTikiCollab project and had a lot of fun making this project. Also, as part of this project I decided to host a fabric giveaway.

McCalls 4769 with Contrast and Sleeves

By on July 26, 2016
Akram's Ideas : McCalls 4769

Last month I participated in the McCall’s Shirtdress Sew-Along and shared my lovely make of McCalls 4769 .

I loved the dress and the wearable muslin so much I decided to make another version.

My latest version of McCalls 4769

This time I choose view D which included sleeves and contrasting elements.
My fabric choice was a pale pink cotton with little dark pink flowers on it. For the contrast I choose a dusty rose solid cotton.

I like the vintage look of this dress.

I had to make some adjustments to the sleeve, but overall I really like the look of how this dress turned out.

While this may be a modern pattern I really like how I’ve managed to give it a more vintage 1940’s look.

Gathered Skirt Paired with Simplicity 1364

By on July 21, 2016
Akram's Ideas : Simplicity 1364 & Gathered Skirt

In an earlier post I mentioned how much I love Simplicity 1364 blouse pattern. I loved it so much I wanted to make more versions of this blouse.

While searching my stash I found I had a lovely butterfly print fabric and decided to use it for another blouse.

I love this cheerful butterfly print

I really liked how the piping turned out on my shift dress I decided to add piping to this blouse.

After making the blouse I found that I had enough fabric left over that I could make a matching skirt.

I decided to make a simple gathered skirt. To give the set a more dress like appearance I aded piping to the skirt waistband.

I can wear it as a dress or as sperates

While the print might be a bit childish I really love the fun look of this this combo. I also love that at first glance it looks like a dress, but has the versatility of a two piece.

Simplicity 1609 Classic Shift with Piping

By on July 19, 2016
Akram's Ideas: Simplicity 1609

I’ve been sewing a lot of 1960’s patterns this year and one of the most icon styles of the 60’s of course is a shift dress.

While antiquing some time ago I came across this lovely vintage pink cotton fabric with a lovely turquoise blue flower print.

I loved the print so much I knew I needed to make something that highlighted the fabric and decided to go with a simple shift dress.

Classic Shift Dress made from vintage fabric

For this project I decided to use Simplicity 1609 a reproduction of a 1960’s JIFFY shift dress.

To add extra interest I added turquoise piping around the neckline and armholes.

I love the addition of the piping on the neck and armholes.

Can you believe I’d never made a shift dress before, it’s true. I don’t know why?

I love this dress so much, it’s fun and stylish.

Simplicity 1364 My Favorite Blouse

By on July 18, 2016
Akram's Ideas: Simplicity 1364 in pink

I have a new favorite blouse pattern and it is Simplicity 1364.

This 1960’s reproduction pattern really is a JIFFY pattern.

Akram's Ideas: Simplicity 1364 in pink
My first version made in pink floral

My first version was a pink floral cotton, which I made as a test, since the pattern was new to me.

I loved it so much I immediately made a second one. This time out of a white floral and used French seams throughout.

I also made matching hair scarves for both blouses.

Second Simplicity 1364 in white floral

This blouse looks great with jeans or a skirt and is so light and comfy to wear in the summer heat.

Making this blouse was easy, it consists of only two main pattern pieces and sews up in no time.  I made even easier to put together by making a few modifications.

McCalls 4769 Shirtdress with Vintage Flare

By on June 30, 2016
Akram's Ideas: McCalls 4769 Shirtdress

Hello All,

I recently participated in the McCall’s Shirtdress Sew-Along and thought I’d share my project with everyone.

For this project I used McCalls 4769 pattern which I had in my stash, unfortunately it’s currently been discontinued.

Since it was the first time I made this dress, I decided to make a wearable muslin first.

The wearable muslin came out very nice

Once I was happy with the muslin I decided to make my final dress.

While the pattern was a modern one, I choose a floral purple print fabric and vintage buttons to give a vintage flare.

I love the vintage look of the final dress

This pattern was  a little tricky and I had to do some pattern grading to get it to fit right. Still I love how this dress came out.

Akram's Ideas: Simplicity 7655 Day Dress

Hello All,

Now that the weather is warmer and it finally is starting to feel like summer I’ve been in a sewing frenzy here recently.

I need to take photos of all my latest makes before I can post about them but I thought I’d share one of my makes from April which I am in love with.

My green day dress made with circa 1968 Simplicity 7655 pattern. This zipper front shift sort of dress is amazing.

The patch pockets are big and hold so much. I also adore the polyester green fabric I choose for the dress.
