3 Different Delphine Skirts

By on October 6, 2016

On of my most used patterns right now is the Delphine Skirt from the book Love at First Stitch by Tilly Walnes.

I made 3 different Delphine Skirts

While I’ve made a few of these skirts in the past, it was the “One Week One Pattern” or #OWOP16 challenge hosted by Cinderellis Sews, that prompted me to make a few new ones.

The goal of the challenge was to wear garments made from one pattern of your choice, every day for one week. I already had 4 previously made Delphine skirts, so that meant I only needed 3 more to make.

You can read about my previous makes here:

While the Delphine skirt is not exactly a vintage pattern it is retro inspired. The skirt itself has a classic 1960’s A-Line design.

I love this nautical inspired one

In the book Love at First Stitch , Tilly goes over a couple of variations on the skirt. Such as adding buttons to the font. Which is what I did for this nautical inspired version.

This brown Delphine skirt is prefect for fall

Since it’s officially autumn I decided that my next two skirts be autumn appropriate. I started first with a brown skirt. I need more brown in my wardrobe.

Love the color of this purple Delphine skirt

I followed up with a lovely purple skirt made out of a quilted type fabric. For both the brown and purple skirt I added a lining for warmth. I also added belt loops which are an option in the book. Finally I also added pockets, because skirts need pockets.

Separates turned Suit

By on September 22, 2016
Akram's Ideas: Vintage Inspired Suit in Green

Back in spring I had planned to participate in the Vintage Suit-Sew-Along. While I never did get around to making a vintage suit per-say; I did manage to make this great vintage inspired suit.

Akram's Ideas: Vintage Inspired Suit in Green
This suit is amazing!

My lovely green suit is made up completely of separates. I actually started this project with the blouse using Simplicity 1364.

Yes, I know another Simplicity 1364 top

I wanted to make a skirt to go with the blouse and the Delphine skirt from the book “Love at First Stitch” By Tilly Walnes. This is my go to skirt pattern.

Akram's Ideas: Vintage Inspired Suit in Green
The Delphine skirt is so easy to make

Once I had the blouse and skirt I thought this outfit was the start of the prefect vintage style suit. All it needed was a jacket to top it off.

Since I had limited fabric I deiced to make the bolero using Butterick 6354 pattern.

Akram's Ideas: Vintage Inspired Suit in Green
This bolero really finished the outfit

This was the perfect paring of separates into the most amazing suit. I love this suit from the color the print. It may just be my favorite outfit I’ve made.

I love everything about this suit

Jennifer Lauren Handmade Gable Top

By on August 23, 2016

I recently had the opportunity to review the Gable Top from Jennifer Lauren Handmade.

Akram's Ideas: Jennifer Lauren Handmade Gable Top
I love this shirt!

If you are looking for a pattern to kick off your autumn sewing, this may be it!

I love everything about this shirt, from it’s ease to put together to the overall look.

The classic slash neckline, the sleeve variations , it’s just perfect.

Akram's Ideas: Jennifer Lauren Handmade Gable Top
I also love my fabric choice

I’ve also been wanting to add a striped knit shirt to my wardrobe for a long time. This seemed like a good pattern for doing just that. Plus, I’m so happy that I managed to line up all the stripes, even the sleeves match up.

Autumn maybe still a week or two out, but I’m already planning like a dozen more of these shirts.

Akram's Ideas: Jennifer Lauren Handmade Gable Top
I’m so happy with this shirt!

The Gable Top is great example of a modern pattern with a lot of classic 1950’s flare.

Butterick 6354 #RetroTikiCollab Project

By on August 11, 2016

Wow, didn’t Abi from the Crafty Pinup do an amazing job on her Bustier to Skirt Pattern Hack Gertie’s 6354 Butterick pattern as part of the #RetroTikiCollab project.

I was also lucky enough to be apart of the #RetroTikiCollab project along with d Abi from The Crafty PinupChristina fromGussets and Godets  and Bianca from Vintage on Tap.

Retro Tiki Collab Project
I’m thrilled to be apart of this project with such talented seamstresses.

For my take on this pattern was to rock the original, by making the pattern as directed.

This was the first time I worked with boning so I was a little nervous but think it all turned out well.

Akram's Ideas : Retro Tiki Collab
I’m really surprised how good this came out.

For this project I used a cotton navy blue fabric with a golden tropical flower print on it. Not necessarily  very tiki, but I had just enough fabric and I need more blue in my wardrobe.

The entire pattern only took a day and a half to put together, so I was quite pleased with the simplicity of this project.

Akram's Ideas : Retro Tiki Collab
The shorts and bustier is great for hot days

I wasn’t sure how much wear I would get out of this pattern, but since I’ve made it I’ve worn it a couple of times. This outfit is great for hot days, especially ones we’ve had recently that have hit a 100+.

I’m really glad to be apart of this #RetroTikiCollab project and had a lot of fun making this project. Also, as part of this project I decided to host a fabric giveaway.

McCalls 4769 with Contrast and Sleeves

By on July 26, 2016

Last month I participated in the McCall’s Shirtdress Sew-Along and shared my lovely make of McCalls 4769 .

I loved the dress and the wearable muslin so much I decided to make another version.

Akram's Ideas : McCalls 4769
My latest version of McCalls 4769

This time I choose view D which included sleeves and contrasting elements.
My fabric choice was a pale pink cotton with little dark pink flowers on it. For the contrast I choose a dusty rose solid cotton.

Akram's Ideas : McCalls 4769
I like the vintage look of this dress.

I had to make some adjustments to the sleeve, but overall I really like the look of how this dress turned out.

While this may be a modern pattern I really like how I’ve managed to give it a more vintage 1940’s look.

Gathered Skirt Paired with Simplicity 1364

By on July 21, 2016

In an earlier post I mentioned how much I love Simplicity 1364 blouse pattern. I loved it so much I wanted to make more versions of this blouse.

While searching my stash I found I had a lovely butterfly print fabric and decided to use it for another blouse.

Akram's Ideas : Simplicity 1364 & Gathered Skirt
I love this cheerful butterfly print

I really liked how the piping turned out on my shift dress I decided to add piping to this blouse.

After making the blouse I found that I had enough fabric left over that I could make a matching skirt.

I decided to make a simple gathered skirt. To give the set a more dress like appearance I aded piping to the skirt waistband.

Akram's Ideas : Simplicity 1364 & Gathered Skirt
I can wear it as a dress or as sperates

While the print might be a bit childish I really love the fun look of this this combo. I also love that at first glance it looks like a dress, but has the versatility of a two piece.

Simplicity 1609 Classic Shift with Piping

By on July 19, 2016

I’ve been sewing a lot of 1960’s patterns this year and one of the most icon styles of the 60’s of course is a shift dress.

While antiquing some time ago I came across this lovely vintage pink cotton fabric with a lovely turquoise blue flower print.

I loved the print so much I knew I needed to make something that highlighted the fabric and decided to go with a simple shift dress.

Akram's Ideas: Simplicity 1609
Classic Shift Dress made from vintage fabric

For this project I decided to use Simplicity 1609 a reproduction of a 1960’s JIFFY shift dress.

To add extra interest I added turquoise piping around the neckline and armholes.

Akram's Ideas: Simplicity 1609
I love the addition of the piping on the neck and armholes.

Can you believe I’d never made a shift dress before, it’s true. I don’t know why?

I love this dress so much, it’s fun and stylish.
