“I dream of Tiki” Hawaiian dress sew-along!

April 7, 2016

Aloha, my fellow vintage sewing enthusiasts! A couple weeks ago I posted an inquiry on the We Sew Retro sew-and-tell Facebook page regarding a Hawaiian dress sew-along. There seems to be enough interest to make this a fun little activity, so here we go!

The rules:

1. It must be a Hawaiian dress. It can be a full skirt, sarong, or whatever floats your boat, it just needs to be Hawaiian/tiki themed!

2. You can use whatever pattern makes you happiest, (or draft your own!), but it should be vintage/vintage reproduction/or styled after an actual vintage garment.

That’s it!

In order to make this as fun and engaging as possible, take pictures of your progress and post each week before we advance to the next stage of our sew-along! I’ll post details on each step as we progress.

If you are having troubles at any point, post for help! This can be in the comments on the blog post itself, or on the sew-and-tell page on Facebook!

We’ll start May 1st, so everyone has a chance to gather supplies šŸ™‚

Post your pattern and fabric choices in the comments for inspiration!

I can’t wait to get started!

  1. I’m just starting to get my sewing mojo back – and this looks like fun. Does anyone know what pattern the full-skirted dress in the upper right corner might be? I’ll rummage through my (tons of) patterns at home, but if anyone knows what it is or one similar, I’d appreciate it. šŸ™‚

  2. I’m in! I may be a little behind everyone because May is super busy for work and I have events 3 weekends… but I want to join!

  3. This sounds like fun! I’ve got the old Hoffman 2013 challenge fabric that I never got to use, and it would be really fun.

  4. Oh, I have to join this sew along! But I’ve never participated in one before, I’m so nervous if I can reach the goals…
I already have a lovely fabric and an inspiration for drafting a pattern!

  5. Is it too late to join? I have some family issues here to solve, and I’m not 100% sure to meet the deadline for finishing the dress. By when do we have to have our finished dresses ready?

  7. i have to see what i have for fabric! i’m in!! I just saw the post though so i’ll really have to hurry to look at what i have!

  8. I wasn’t going to participate in this, but I’ve jest returned from a South Pacific Cruise, and of course I went fabric shopping in Noumea and Port Vila, so now I have suitable fabric!
