A hello and a vintage patterned skirt

Hello retro stitchers, this is my first post on here.  I have been a reader of “we sew retro” for a while, and now I want to share one of my makes which I hope you’ll like.

Vintage curtain fabric

Vintage curtain fabric

The fabric for this skirt used to be my Mum’s curtains in a previous life!  She says she had them up in the early seventies.  And the print is fab – really bold and autumnal.

The curtain skirt

I love this skirt. It has an elasticated waist, and an easy A-line shape.  But the thing I love best about it has to be the fabric.  Whenever I wear it (and that is a lot) I get a real kick from knowing I won’t see anyone else wearing the same thing. I guess that is the joy with vintage finds.

I can’t imagine what my Mum’s living room looked like with this print covering the bay windows.  It must have been very busy, but its perfect for my skirt. The other good thing about using curtain fabric for clothing in the winter is that it’s nice and thick and warm. Perfect for the cold snap we are having.

I started sewing a few months ago and I have not looked back. It's so amazing to take a flat piece of cloth and with a few alterations you have a garment. Nearly all my sewing has been using vintage fabric, old curtains, or old patterned sheets. I've enjoyed reading blogs on sewing, including this one, and now I have my own little blog too. I'm just finding my sewing "voice"; learning my skills and discovering what suits me. This is all such fun.
