Help with coat!

January 31, 2012

Good morning!
I am in need of some help/suggestions from you lovely people out there.

I saw a while back this coat and immediately fell in love with it, problem was (before it had gotten reserved) it would be a tad too small and I couldn’t justify spending money on something that I wouldn’t be able to wear currently.
Next best step, make it myself! Only problem with that is that I don’t know what kind of pattern to use and all I have in my stash is 40’s blazers.
If anyone has any suggestions as far as a pattern or altering a blazer pattern to suit this it would be much appreciated!

  1. Simplicity 2057. It may be out of print (can’t seem to access the Simplicity website today). Here’s a listing from ebay:

I also think this early ’70s Style pattern is adorable, but it’s a fairly small size:

  2. Your best bet would be to start with a 1970s princess-seamed coat (or eased dress) pattern with the right seam and style lines, and a close-enough collar, and then work up the belt and pocket details and tweak the collar shape. Some suggestions:

http://www.etsy.com/listing/70274562/ (could work if you need a larger size)
http://www.etsy.com/listing/66688394/ (wd need work on the ease and front lap development, but already has the integral belt and long collar points. Skirt seams are wrong though – good candidate for Frankensteining to a different pattern’s skirt!)

  3. Simplicity 2057 has the real lines of this coat including the pockets. You could easily split the waist and add the band or simply sew a band over the outside of the coat. good luck with your project. I’m on a similar quest with a J Crew coat that lists for $900.00.

  4. Jill- I couldn’t tell what brand it was, and I agree with you that with some altering 2057 could really work.

Simplicity 2084 also has alot of the same lines, so it could work as well
