Sew-Grateful Challenge Dress: Simplicity 4908

December 6, 2011

Hi all,

This is my very first attempt at a vintage pattern and also obviously my first post on Sew Retro after lurking  here for a long time.

So first an introduction: My name is Alana and I’ve been blogging over at Lazy Stitching for almost a year and a half. I’m a new Londoner having moved here a few months ago from New Zealand which I’m really enjoying (although I’m still in denial about the winter temperatures here). I’m plus-sized which leaves me spending lots of my sewing time grading patterns upwards and figuring out full bust adjustments.

Which leads me to Simplicity 4908.

This 1960’s dress was for My Happy Sewing Place’s Sew Grateful challenge using a pattern I won in a giveaway from Sewing Through the Motions. The various angles of the bodice pieces meant that even after grading and an FBA it still wouldn’t align so I wound up fudging it using pieces from other patterns (more details here). Still I’m happy it all came together in the end.

  1. You did a great job!! I have trouble trying to make a pattern bigger, your dress fist really good, and I love that bow in the back.

  2. This is so pretty – you chose the perfect color. It’s got a bit of a Colette Patterns vibe, hasn’t it.

I’m glad you came out of lurk mode 😉 Welcome! Looking forward to seeing what you make next!
