A friend of mine has a lovely vintage dress with a helplessly broken zipper, and I assured her that finding a replacement metal zipper wouldn’t be a problem. Which means, of course, that I don’t have the size she needs in my small stash of vintage notions, and she hasn’t been able to find one online. Do any of you fabulous seamstresses have a 14″ black zipper (preferably with black or silver teeth) that you’d be willing to sell? Or a lead on where she would be able to buy one? She’s not in a particular hurry, but it would be nice to check it off her To Do list.
I’d be much obliged, Ladies (and Gents)!
14" Black Metal Zipper.
I don't have any myself, but if nobody here has one, and you have your heart set on vintage, etsy has a bunch of them. I've also found vintage notions on Ebay.
i buy my vintage zippers at value village or other assorted thrift stores. i usually am able to buy a whack of them for 2 or 3 dollars. or separately for .25-.50 cents a piece.
I guess I'm also not clear on why this needs to be a vintage zipper. Don't get me wrong, I have a good sized stock pile of thrift store zippers. But it's not that there's something special about them…they're just cheap zippers. A zipper is a zipper, whether it was made in 2011 or 1973.
I have one. You can have it if you want it.
I should add though the teeth are black on one side and silver on the other. It is metal though
Thanks for all of your help, everyone! I'll pass along your hints and links.
Red – I love Etsy! I'm a vendor there myself. While there are plenty of zippers there, at this precise moment there are none that fit her requirements. Of course, that could change at any time!
Amanda – my friend is looking for a vintage zipper because it's a vintage dress and replacing it with a nylon/polyester zipper would look a little odd. Also, a modern zipper would depreciate the resale value of the dress if she ever decides to let it go down the line.
I definately have some vintage zippers in all colours sizes etc at home. I bought a bunch at an estate sale last fall. Let me see what I have and feel free to email me if you want some pictures.
I also have vintage buttons if anyone is interested. One of these days I will get everything on etsy.
