Fabric recommendation

August 21, 2010

I desperately want to make something out of this fabric – maybe a shirtdress like this.( teach typography and just love it!

Can anyone recommend the fabric weight that would work best (quilting, sateen or lawn?)- I usually buy by touch and like something with a bit of substance, not too drapey for my curves, not too silky and easy to sew.

Also thinking of cutting on the bias for a slight chevron look – pointing down on top and up on bottom. Perhaps it would be too busy.

Any opinions?

  1. Hi,
I'd use the lawn I think, but quilting cotton works pretty well in my experience for shirtdresses, if you like something with body.

If you cut it on the bias it will have more drape, but I kind of like the print straight on…

  2. Are you going to do the full skirt or the slim skirt? I'd use lawn or quilting for the full skirt. For the slim skirt version I'd use quilting or sateen. You can get a swatch booklet of all the fabrics from Spoonflower for $1. Good luck!

  3. Lawn is very lightweight. This dress looks like it needs more weight, so the quilting or sateen would be better.

    Gorgeous pattern!
