Pattern FAIL: Simplicity 4750

April 14, 2010

Failure is often a better teacher than success. The lesson I learned from Simplicity 4750 was not to trust patterns blindly. I thought this blouse pattern from 1943, complete with instructions for making it from a man’s shirt, was a friend, but I found out to my cost that it was a frenemy.

Anyone who struggles with set-in sleeves or trusts pattern instructions not to lead them astray can learn from my mistakes over at my blog. Bonus: if you’re willing to take it on, this semi-evil pattern could be yours!

  1. Sorry to hear about your frustration. Ive had a similar outcome on a 30s mail order I have. Its an amazing dress, so Im just going to adjust the pattern itself.

Ive learned, mockups are a gals best friend.

Plus its a wartime pattern, as far as creating an actual facing piece, the fewer pieces for them to make, the better. Im a facing fanatic, though. I always face everything.

Dont be too mad at the pattern. It is what it has been for almost 70 years.
