Vintage Sewing

how to store your pattern collection

April 3, 2010
I just posted this at my blog, but I thought it might be of interest to my fellow vintage pattern collectors here. I think the good designers at Ikea had us sewists and pattern hoarders in mind when they designed the Aneboda chest of drawers, because they fit patterns in perfectly. It’s deep enough to fit the tall Vogue ones in standing up:

and wide enough to fit five rows of Simplicity patterns across:

and you can see your beautiful patterns through the translucent front as well:

I have two of these babies, and together they fit my 700+ patterns in easily, with room for further additions of course!
Happy sewing everyone
  1. That is fabulous! I've been wanting an excuse to take the kind of long drive to Ikea for a while now, and I think you've given it to me! 🙂 Thanks!

  2. Wow! thanks co much for the idea!
I have been thinking about getting a filing cabinet but not had the time to go look, I am glad I haven;t had the time now!
    It looks really nice! 🙂

  3. I appreciate the recommendation. I've tried filing cabinets and so on but nothing has really been suitable. And I can't stand to shift boxes, every time I want to flip through my collection.
It looks like the Ikea cabinet will accommodate the archival bags that I keep my vintage collection in. Great Idea!

  4. These are the cabinets we use at our shop, and I have my own at home! They have stood up well for the past three years, with the constant opening and closing and the sheer weight of the patterns. Two thumbs up!

  5. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your posting this. I had bypassed this one simply because I wasn't taken with the 'plasticky' fronts on the drawer, but I agree that seeing the patterns thru them is a great idea!

I'm working with an old pattern cabinet from a closed JoAnns store, and it doesn't fit all the large envelopes. Anyone want it???
